Hi, I'm Carla!
Mother, wife, lifelong learner professional, educator, and inspector. I grew up in Winston-Salem and I love this city!
I studied Environmental Health at Western Carolina University and after four magical years in the Great Smoky Mountains, I received my Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health and returned to Winston. I married my college sweetheart and after celebrating seven years of marriage, we welcomed our first child.
I began my career as a Maternal Child Health Educator and I had the wonderful opportunity to teach parents and families about baby safety including safe sleep and car seat safety for several years. In 2013, I became a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (aka a health inspector). Over the course of my public service career, I inspected day care centers, schools, foster homes, group homes, hospitals, some of your favorite restaurants, and much more.
In 2022, I made the decision to run for the North Carolina State House. It wasn’t just about a seat in the legislature—it was about creating a voice for families like mine, for working moms trying to juggle it all, and for the next generation who deserve a future built on opportunity and meritocracy. While I didn’t win that race, the journey taught me something bigger: advocacy doesn’t stop at the ballot box (and, gerrymandering is the worst). It happens at every kitchen table, in every conversation with our kids, and through every choice we make as parents and community members.
Today, as the creator of Inspector Mama, I’ve come back to where it all started: with families. Through my business, I’m still working to ensure that home is a safe, empowering space for everyone—whether that means offering parenting tips, celebrating our cultura, or tackling big conversations about identity, safety, and representation. Because at the end of the day, I believe in the power of connection. I believe that when we build strong homes, we build strong communities—and when we support working-class families, we all thrive.
Thank you for being here and supporting my business.
