Hi! It's been a while and I have special treat for you! A Halloween Safety Bonus episode!!!

To keep some sense of normalcy during the pandemic, some parents and grown ups are going to celebrate Halloween. It looks different this year and it's going to be fun.

As you select costumes, pick flame resistant ones. Select costumes that are bright and have reflective tape on them. Costumes themselves should fit well to prevent getting caught on bushes and short enough to avoid tripping. Walk with flashlights and make sure there is a responsible adult with the little ones.

Check costume makeup to ensure that it doesn't cause an allergic reaction. Real talk - In the past, I just don't paint the faces of little ones. One can never know when an allergic reaction will happen. If you do though, make sure to test it every year.

Inspect the candy before you give it to your child. What you are checking for is to make sure that the packaging is intact and that the candy does not have a weird appearance or discoloration. Discard any packaging that is obviously damaged, or has tiny pinholes, tears... if it looks suspicious, throw it away. If your child gets upset because you threw candy away, explain to them that it's not safe. For example, "See here? Where it's a funny color? I'm not sure that its safe to eat, so it's going in the trash. We can look for another! Want to check the next one with me?" You can talk through what you are checking for and talk out loud. This helps your child learn the process.

Skip traditional Halloween games like bobbing for apples. Y'all its flu season and there's a Covid-19 Pandemic. This is not the year for that. If you choose to bob for apples - keep it to your immediate bubble only. That's the people that live in your house all of the time.

Before I close this episode, I want to give Child Care Resource Center of Winston-Salem a shout out because they are having a Halloween Costume Contest. Go to their website: https://childcareresourcecenter.org to enter or to vote for people. CCRC is an organization that helps parents find quality childcare.

Be safe and keep to your bubble - there's like 4 planets in retrograde right now, don't tempt fate.
