Arroz Con Leche

Craving a taste of nostalgia that transports you back to cherished memories of childhood? Join me on a delightful culinary journey as we recreate the comforting flavors of my upbringing with our authentic arroz con leche recipe! Inspired by the warmth and love that permeated my grandmother's kitchen, where this creamy Mexican rice pudding was a cherished staple, I've embarked on a quest to perfect a recipe that captures the essence of tradition and simplicity.

Como fanático incondicional de mi abuelita (porque, seamos sinceros, ¿quién no adora la cocina de su abuela?)As an avid abuelita stan (because let's be real, who isn't?), I've experimented with various versions of this beloved dessert, always striving to evoke the same warmth that my grandmother's arroz con leche brought to our family gatherings. While some recipes may call for fancy ingredients and elaborate techniques, I've discovered that the true beauty of arroz con leche lies in its simplicity: a humble blend of rice, milk, and sugar, elevated to sublime heights by the magic of time and tradition.

My journey to recreate the perfect arroz con leche has been filled with trials and triumphs. From relying on childhood memories to improvising with whatever sugar was on hand, each attempt has been a labor of love. Of course, no culinary adventure would be complete without the occasional critique from the toughest critics of all—my own family. While my little one may not have initially shared my enthusiasm for this classic treat, I've learned that patience and persistence are key when it comes to introducing new flavors to young palates. And while my husband may not request arroz con leche as often as I'd like… Well, I don’t care. I easily make a small batch for myself.

So, whether you're a seasoned arroz con leche aficionado or embarking on your first culinary adventure, I invite you to join me in savoring the timeless comfort of this Mexican classic. With its velvety texture, delicate sweetness, and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, our homemade arroz con leche is sure to evoke cherished memories and create new ones for generations to come.

Listen - if you burn the dang rice to the bottom of the pot, just throw it out and start over. It happens to the best of us.

xoxo,

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Start by cooking the rice with 2 cups of water and the 2 cinnamon sticks. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. This should take about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Once the rice is cooked, remove the cinnamon stick and add the milk, sweetened condensed milk, and a pinch of salt. Stir everything together and let it cook over medium heat. You'll want to stir frequently to prevent sticking and to get that creamy consistency we're looking for.
  3. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the mixture thickens to your liking. Remember, it will continue to thicken as it cools.
  4. Serve your Arroz con Leche warm or chilled, depending on your preference. Feel free to top it with raisins, a sprinkle of cinnamon, vanilla or some lemon zest to make it extra especial.

Notes

Substitutions:

If you don't have whole cinnamon sticks, you can use 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.

If you don't have sweetened condensed milk, add 1 cup of sugar (granulated or brown).

Remember, this recipe is a staple of Hispanic households. If you are missing an ingredient, just use what you have. That's how the best family recipes are created.
